Toubab Krewe and John Brown's Body at Majestic Theatre
North Carolina's Toubab Krewe doesn't shy away from the jam circuit but doesn't blend in, either, thanks to a West Africa-inspired sound that makes way for the chiming strings of the kora (a traditional instrument from that region) and plenty of warm, highlife-style guitar melodies. More important than just the general sonic flavor, though, is that Toubab Krewe makes good on some of the rhythmic complexity of its influences, which makes even some of the longer tracks on 2008's Live At The Orange Peel much more stimulating than your average 10-plus-minute instrumental workout. Also adding some real musical heft to an often crowded (and often derided) genre is roots-reggae act John Brown's Body, which piles on a fair amount of trippy dub flourishes while grounding itself in assertive, chugging rhythms.
