Just as his garage-rocking ancestors went from aping R&B acts to trying to replicate the sounds of an acid trip, Ty Segall cranked the reverb and made room for dabs of fried mysticism on his third album, Melted. A lysergic wash suits the San Francisco native’s lo-fi tunes just fine, filling in the spaces between chunky power chords with woozy asides, and lending tracks like the Stooges-meet-T. Rex stomper “Girlfriends” an apocalyptic verve. With 2011’s Goodbye Bread, Segall reaches back to his punk-rock roots. That record hadn’t even stop spinning on most turntables before the he released Hair, a 2012 collaboration with White Fence (joining Segall on tour here). And the great pysch pop nuggets on that album will still have their hooks in by the time the Ty Segall Band—featuring Mikal Cronin, Charlie Moothart, and Emily Rose Epstein—puts out its mini album, Slaughterhouse, this summer.
