Does the term "supergroup" apply if there aren't any humongous stars or egos involved? Works Progress Administration pulls together four folks who've been doing their thing admirably, if often modestly, for years: Singer-songwriter Glen Phillips of Toad The Wet Sprocket, Nickel Creek's Sean Watkins, and fiddler Luke Bulla. The group's self-titled album, released this summer, finds all these talents coming together, along with current Elvis Costello And The Imposters rhythm section Davey Faragher and Peter Thomas (who will not appear with them here, unfortunately), Sean's sister/former Nickel Creek bandmate Sara Watkins, and more. The result is a comfortable, casual mix of alt-country and pop, which suits even the more somber tunes Phillips contributes.
