Yo La Tengo and Times New Viking at Barrymore Theatre
Yo La Tengo's 25-year run is an open parenthesis in a world that can't decide between feedback-cracked dissonance and classy chill-outs. Whichever sound is considered more cutting-edge or stylish at the moment, the Hoboken, N.J., trio comfortably outpaces most bands at both, not to mention plenty of sonic territory in between. The band's 12th album, 2009's Popular Songs, makes having it all ways at once seem like the most logical, natural thing there is, embracing cheeky funk on "Periodically Double Or Triple" and slipping back under a canopy of pulsating distortion on the 16-minute finale "And The Glitter Is Gone." Once your ears recover from opening band Times New Viking's storms of static, the Columbus, Ohio, outfit's knack for British twee and manic college rock is more prominent than the massive feedback and clipping it's served with.
