Zechs Marquise, El Valiente, and Nester at High Noon Saloon
Although it often seems like the entirety of El Paso is knotted in the ever-growing At The Drive-In/The Mars Volta/Sparta family tree, Zechs Marquise actually lays claim to the DNA: Both bassist Marfred Rodriguez-Lopez and keyboardist Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez are the younger brothers of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, making them legitimate heirs to his spazzy prog-rock throne. Marcel even pulls double duty as The Mars Volta’s percussionist, but uses Zechs Marquise to indulge his stoner side with sprawling, improv-based fusions of jazz and rock that resemble Santana sitting in with Can. Though the band takes its name from a character from the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing anime series (the kind with the giant robots equipped with guns), its music is far less annoying than that might suggest.
