When it opened in 1994, Great Dane was the first brewery to operate in Madison since the '60s, and it has since become integral to the city's social fabric--not least because of its three locations, plus an airport outlet. While the menus vary slightly by location, the food revolves around burgers, sandwiches, large cuts of meat, salads, pastas, and curds, much of it clumsily named for Wisconsin people and places. Each location also has its own vibe: West and South are a little more suburban than the college-kid-packed Downtown. In the summer months, the downtown beer garden makes a perfect place to enjoy a meal or a happy-hour brew from the rotating beer selection.
