Just driving by Sweeney’s, you can smell the intense, meaty aroma of char-grilled burgers wafting from its modest exterior. A popular hangout for sports fans and anyone who’s just looking throw back a cold one, this little bar sits near the border of Middleton and Madison but attracts residents of both cities with its tasty tavern food. Besides its famous burgers, made exclusively of extra-lean steak trimmings that are ground fresh daily at the neighboring butcher shop, you’ll find sandwiches like the thick summer sausage on a rustic cornmeal Kaiser roll and the grilled-cheese special, with salty, satisfying layers of bacon and raw onion smothered in swiss and cheddar on grilled light rye. Of course, a tavern as traditionally Wisconsin as this one is almost required to have a fish-fry, and Sweeney’s is reliably good.
