Today is the eighth day of the 2013 Milwaukee Film Festival, which runs through October 10. In order to help you make sense of the bewildering array of films and panel discussions, The A.V. Club will be featuring selected picks for each day of the fest. If you ever wanted to stalk us (and see some great films in the process), now’s your chance.
• The Milwaukee Show: 7 p.m., Oriental Theatre
• Cream City After Party: 9 p.m., The Hotel Foster
Just over a year ago, our fair city was forever changed when a bunch of marketing majors appealed to our sense of local pride (in a completely non-cynical way), raised a bunch of money, and filmed a car blowing up in an empty lot—you know, for Milwaukee. Finally, Milwaukee showed the entertainment world that it was indeed a “creative powerhouse.” Hollywood hasn’t stopped beating down our door since.
That’s all bullshit, of course, because Milwaukee has long had a vibrant film scene. Need proof? Check out tonight’s Milwaukee Show at the Oriental Theatre. More than a dozen short films—covering everything from sci-fi to animation—will light up the big screen, all produced by homegrown talent. Of the films, we’re most excited for Spectacle!, an ambitious multi-part, multi-genre mash-up from the always awesome Honeycomb Productions. Oh, and we’d suggest getting in line early for the Milwaukee Show, too, as this all-local program is one of the festival’s most popular.
Following the screening, there’s no better place to end up than The Hotel Foster. The official Cream City After Party will feature DJs Asher Diamonds and Why B. spinning until the wee hours of the morning, as well as a who’s-who of Milwaukee filmmaking talent milling about. Prove you love Milwaukee by being there.
