6 shows worth seeing at WMSE Radio Summercamp
Unlike most music festivals in Milwaukee—which take place in a single, often non-descript location—Radio Summercamp spreads its wings, SXSW-style, over music venues throughout the city. In addition to headliner shows by Liars, Band Of Horses, and Neon Indian—and Sunday’s Backyard BBQ at Cathedral Square Park—local bars are messy with WMSE shows this weekend. Here are six shows we recommend.
Collections Of Colonies Of Bees
This would already be one of the best RSC shows even if it wasn’t drummer Jon Mueller’s last local appearance with the instrumental post-rockers. (Or if it wasn’t part of the the A.V. Club-sponsored Cactus Club stage.) Band member Thomas Wincek will be even more visible at this show, also playing with All Tiny Creatures.
Jack Oblivian And The Tennessee Tearjerkers
The garage-rock pioneer has been marrying roots music with punk rock sonics since the ’80s. Expect to see many faces from Milwaukee’s thriving garage-rock scene at this show.
John Doe with Robbie Fulks and Nora O’Connor
Here are two masterful singer-songwriters for the price of one, taking on country music with sly grins and cocked eyebrows.
The Milwaukee music scene is easily Wisconsin’s most prominent at the moment, but Madison is staying in the game with this 21-year-old goth diva, whose 2010 EP Stidulum has drawn raves from national press outlets.
Milwaukee’s most adventurous hip-hop outfit will release its first album in five years, Figs, in October on Milwaukee’s Listening Party Records. Let’s hope for a sneak preview at this show.
