A.V. Club's guide to Milwaukee's Twitterverse
Let us help you make the most of local social media
Because we’re suckers for trendy fads, Decider (@decidermke) knew it was high time we blasted through the local Twitterverse to find the best of the best in local pages. Several retweets (RT), a couple direct messages (DM), and a few @replies later, we came back with this list of Twitterers from the 48th most active Twitter community in the world. We’re hoping it will help you make some sense of this phenomenon that’s slowly but surely distracting our nation’s workforce.
Just about every reporter at the Journal Sentinel is tweeting away, but the paper’s NewsHub (@NewsHub) is the most manageable and interesting feed. Sonya Jongsma Knauss (@sonyajk), a member of JS’s editorial board, is also a good read. Knauss’ focus on current events is playfully balanced with stories of her adventures in parenting.
Favorites: Local TV news coverage often approaches the surreal. For a taste of that local flavor follow WISN 12 (@WISN12News) and TMJ4 news anchor Vince Vitrano (@vincevitrano), who recently provided funny updates of a recent station visit by Conan O’Brien.
Many Milwaukee arts groups and galleries have jumped on board the Twitter train, but they are infrequent twitterers. On the performing arts side, groups like the Florentine Opera (@FlorentineOpera) and the United Performing Arts Fund (@UPAF) do a fantastic job of promoting local performing arts events and giving a nice glance behind the curtain. Then there are the more intimate tweets of local artist, illustrator, and educator Max Estes (@madebymax), who will tell you about new projects he’s working on as well as his midnight snacks.
Favorites: Milwaukee Film artistic director Jonathan Jackson (@jacksonjonathan) provides quality commentary on contemporary film and the film festivals he attends. The Journal Sentinel’s Mary Louise Schumacher (@artcity) is by far one of the most active arts twitterers in the city. If you want to know about an art opening or who’s behind the latest condo development monstrosity, she’s definitely the one to follow.
Music in Milwaukee
The folks running the Pabst, Riverside and Turner Hall Ballroom (@PabstTheater) keep their Twitter feed packed with show announcements and links to stories about acts playing at their venues. Radio Milwaukee’s Tarik Moody (@RadioMilwaukee) always seeks out interesting links that will surprise even the biggest music geek.
Favorite: Margaret Stutt (@Pezzettino) regularly sends tweets from backstage at various cities around the country, and they’re very addictive.
Local businesses that offer discounts
Dee’s Wine Stop in Bay View (@deeswinestop) and downtown favorite Blatz Market & Liquor (@BlatzLiquor) announce new arrivals and offer deals on wine and beer through Twitter. Establishment Salon in Shorewood (@easyotis) recently tweeted offers for free haircuts and 20 percent off on Aveda products. Your four-legged friends also need to look and feel great and Metropawlis (@metropawlis) is constantly announcing discounts on everything from doggy bakery to catnip.
Favorite: Frugal Gossip (@frugalgossip) obsessively documents Milwaukee sales fliers and coupon inserts. If you want to know if Target, Sendik’s, or Trader Joe’s has the cheapest milk this week, look no further.
To stay on top of the Brew Crew this summer, you’ll get your best coverage and updates from the Journal Sentinel’s feed (@js_brewers). Basketball your game? The Milwaukee Bucks’ (@bucksdotcom) official feed is the way to go. If you are more into the spectacle and attitude of roller derby, the Brew City Bruisers’ feed (@BrewcityBruiser) is where you need to land.
Favorite: Milwaukee Bucks player Charlie Villanueva (@CV31) became a national Twitter celebrity recently by tweeting from the locker room at halftime.
If you’re feeling a little lonely or just like staring at pictures of puppies and kittens, the Wisconsin Humane Society (@WiscHumane) posts all its new arrivals. Sick of caramel cashew? Before you head out for frozen custard, you’ll want check Kopp’s (@kopps) flavor of the day tweets. Eco-warriors will want to follow Greener Milwaukee (@GreenerMKE) to stay on top of the Cream City’s green movement.
Favorite: Think your house may be haunted? The folks behind Milwaukee Ghosts (@milwaukeeghosts) want to know. From paranormal to paranoia, these guys provide local ghost news and haunted history tours of the city.
