Metalheads--as metalheads are fond of pointing out--are perhaps the smartest subgroup of music fans there is, so they surely already know that "benighted" means "unenlightened" and Sodom is a town destroyed by God in the Bible for being inhospitable hosts to angels (i.e. raping them). For the rest of us, Benighted In Sodom's M. Thorn is one hoity-toity devil worshipper, quoting Hamlet in the "About" section of his MySpace page and greeting visitors with the personal credo, "Misery will be my opiate." If, say, Colin Meloy of The Decemberists summed himself up by citing Shakespeare, the literary folkie would be pummeled by the same people who would take this Fort Lauderdale black metal band seriously.
