Daily Agenda Aug. 20: Sometime Sweet Susan
The classic Milwaukee band returns tonight at Turner Hall
Sometime Sweet Susan was one of the biggest bands in Milwaukee’s burgeoning underground rock scene of the early ’90s, laying the groundwork for a golden age of groups like The Promise Ring that broke through to a national audience. While SSS recorded with Steve Albini and boasted catchy, Sonic Youth-inspired fuzz-pop hooks, it’s mostly remembered today by local hardcore music fans and musicians who were inspired by them. SSS reunited for an Atomic Records send-off concert earlier this year, and the band is back again to play the launch concert for WMSE’s Radio Summer Camp festival. Also on the bill is The Dim Suns, which includes members of fellow ’90s Milwaukee favorites Compound Red, as well as two of the city’s better current groups, Juniper Tar and The Trusty Knife.
