Daily Agenda August 27: Prestige Atlantic Impulse

The Violent Femmes drummer goes jazzy

Prestige Atlantic Impulse, the latest project from Violent Femmes drummer Victor DeLorenzo, takes its name from its members’ favorite record labels, though the Milwaukee group’s artsy skronking takes an experimental turn from those respected jazz and R&B labels. PAI’s jazzy improvisations are certainly a far cry from the Femmes’ catchy college rock, though fortunately the group’s smoldering explorations suggest this is no mere midlife musical trip. The band appears to have found a home at Sugar Maple—owned by noted free-jazz fanatic Bruno Johnson—with several gigs lined up at the Bay View bar through the end of the year. See them there tonight.
