Daily Agenda Oct. 2: Stephen Lynch
Musical comedy that actually doesn't suck
Stephen Lynch has his own little style fleshed out—sick and ironic lyrics set to sweet, acoustic melodies—but after a few tunes, you know the drill. To his credit, Lynch often finds a clever way to unfold a story (as on his tune “Lullaby (Divorce Song),” from his 2000 album A Little Bit Special), and occasionally risks offending even those eager to sing along with his odes to masturbation (“Kill A Kitten”) and retardation (“Special”). Unsurprisingly, he tends to get funnier as his humor gets more twisted. Since 2000, Lynch has recorded two live albums, but only just released a studio follow-up, titled 3 Balloons, this year. See him tonight at Pabst Theater.
