With the holiday weekend coming up, Thursday is really Friday for most folks, so who wants to party tonight? There ought to be lots of dancing going on at Summerfest for Afrobeat royalty Femi Kuti—see our interview here—and we also have to give some props to dance-pop duo Chester French, half of which hails from Milwaukee. (See our interview here.) But, c’mon, the real party is going to be over at the Harley-Davidson Roadhouse for Judas Priest. Hugely influential on pretty much everyone anywhere near hard rock, especially thrash and speed metal, Judas Priest was also indirectly responsible for the classic Heavy Metal Parking Lot documentary, capturing tailgaters at a 1986 Priest show. Singer Rob Halford went solo in the ’90s, but the group reformed a few years back, releasing two new albums so far: Angel Of Retribution and double-disc concept album Nostradamus. On this tour, they celebrate the 30th anniversary of their classic British Steel by playing the album in its entirety, along with a hefty complement of other hits. Here’s a classic cut from British Steel, “Breaking The Law.”

Away from Summerfest, The Paper Chase headlines a show at Cactus Club with Call Me Lightning and Red Knife Lottery. This Dallas group’s flailing, stop-start jazz-punk occasionally sounds as if it might disintegrate completely, but it always manages to pull back from the edge with precisely calibrated musicianship. The Paper Chase’s 2006 record for Kill Rock Stars, Now You Are One Of Us, demonstrates both sides of the band’s personality, melding horror-movie keyboards and samples (à la Pere Ubu’s Dub Housing) with a wry sense of humor evinced by titles like “The Kids Will Grow Up To Be Assholes” and “What’s So Amazing About Grace.” The group is now touring behind its new album, Someday This Could All Be Yours, Vol. 1, the first part of a two-volume set about natural disasters.
