Come for The Roots, and stay for some of Milwaukee's loudest bands

The Roots have been extremely cool so far on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, a show that gains a lot from the energy emitted even just sitting there. No other outfit in hip-hop (not to mention any other realm of music) boasts as strong a reputation for barnstorming funk pyrotechnics, and even if The Roots’ incendiary leanings are tempered a bit on TV, we’re lucky to have them back tonight at Summerfest. Even better news is that the Late Night gig hasn’t tempered the group’s restless activity: A new Roots record called How I Got Over is due in the fall. To get you primed, here's a video for one of the best songs of the decade.

Over at the Cascio Interstate Groove Garage, Summerfest’s most Milwaukee music-centric stage presents probably its loudest and most unruly lineup of the entire festival, with top-notch punk and metal (or at least punk and metal-tinged) bands Red Knife Lottery, Cougar Den, Terrior Bute, Father Phoenix, and Protestant. Here is Red Knife Lottery’s video for “Junkie Jazz.”
