Danny Gokey update: He's still from Milwaukee!
The American Idol star is a favorite to go the distance, remain a local native
It’s been a while since we checked in with American Idol contestant and national Milwaukee representative Danny Gokey, and Decider figured that we owed it to our readers to make sure that this criminally under-reported show finally get its due in the local press. Really, this has nothing to do with boosting our traffic by triggering Gokey Google Alerts. We would never exploit Gokey like that. That (Gokey) is just (Gokey) cheap. Gokey Gokey Gokey.
Anyway, Journal Sentinel Gokey beat writer Tim Cuprisin reports that Gokey is a favorite to make the Idol finals. At least that’s according to judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson, who predicted that Gokey will end up in the final two with Adam Lambert. (He’s the one with the “rocker” image, which in the context of Idol means he could probably win a slap fight with Richard Marx.) Former Idol winner Fantasia—you might remember her as "whatshernameagain?"— also thinks Gokey is the main man, because he can make a song his own, which is important for a talent show focused solely on cover material written, performed, and popularized by other artists.
Big-city folks aren’t quite feeling the Gokey fever, however. Cristina Kinon of The New York Daily News says she has “dead-wife fatigue”—we’re guessing she got one or two slightly miffed emails about that line—and “now I’m just over the whole thing.” But Cristina, do you realize he’s from Milwaukee? Milwaukee! New York’s Newsday also wasn’t feeling Gokey after this week’s so-so performance of “Get Ready,” which it called "clumsy."
Maybe the New York snobs didn't hear "Get Ready" on a proper set of speakers. At least that's what Brad Hicks of Fox 6 thought when he heard the song on the studio's suh-weet playback system. Hicks is right—you can't feel that full Gokey power without some kick-ass subwoofers.
Will Gokey go the distance, or will his luck soon run out? If it’s the latter, what will this mean for Milwaukee ever having a reality show star again? Discuss.
