This week's most notable band name

We all know that dd/mm/yyyy —playing Thursday at The Cactus Club—stands for (and is most likely pronounced) “day/month/year.” But it’s more fun to say it phonetically, with a little stutter: d-d-m-m-y-y-y-y. See, didn’t that sound cool? No? Thankfully the Canadian band makes music that’s less clumsy than its moniker. But only just: The group’s clunky synthesizers and bratty chants mesh like sticks in bike spokes with some jerky, disorienting, inside-out disco beats. And the guitars sound like they’re played by a rusty industrial robot with a grudge against humankind. But dd/mm/yyyy manages to transcend and even harness that whiplashing awkwardness—not to mention rise above its tongue-tying tag. With individual members named Tomas Del Botox, Moshe Moshe, and Rat King, however, the outfit has bigger things to worry about. Here's a clip of the band performing at the Virgin Festival in 2007.
