Dear Montel Williams, sorry about that whole “possession of drug paraphernalia” thing
More News Net
Since sifting through dull newspapers, hyperbolic blogs, and overflowing RSS feeds for meaningful news can be an arduous process, News Net catches and compiles both the amusing and the significant reports that were overlooked throughout the week.
• Who could forget the time former talk show host and Sylvia Browne boy toy Montel Williams was busted with a pot pipe at Mitchell International Airport? (Confession: us.) Back in January, Williams was made to pay $484 when police discovered a metal pipe in his possession. True, Williams is a vocal advocate of medical marijuana and uses it to treat pain from his multiple sclerosis—but in this case, the pipe didn’t even contain any trace of illegal drugs. That ticket was dismissed earlier this week, reports the Journal Sentinel. JS Columnist Jim Stingl has this to say about the dismissed ticket: “Even in the fog of the drug war, we sometimes eventually get it right.” Puff, puff, pass, Jim. Puff, puff, pass.
• Angry, misinformed, and vindictive comments are a common feature of many modern websites, but what if those angry, misinformed, and vindictive comments are the website? The Journal Sentinel took a look at user review-dependent sites like Urbanspoon, Open Table, and the seemingly ubiquitous Yelp.com, and examined the sites’ impact on the restaurant industry.
• Don’t call it a comeback: The Shops Of Grand Avenue are getting two new stores, reports the Journal Sentinel. A locally owned women’s shoe store named La Chic Bella and a new Sprint store will soon join the illustrious Grand Avenue fold.
• Milwaukee hip-hop artist and advocate JC Poppe was interviewed by Amerikas Addiction. In addition to chatting about the local hip-hop scene, Poppe dishes out some practical life advice:
There is no etiquette in buffet eating. Grab all that you want and can, regardless of how much somebody behind you wants it as well...they should’ve gotten there first. Open doors for the elderly, don’t swear in front of children, if somebody is having a seizure make sure that the area is free of anything that could hurt them while they are having the seizure, and don’t burn bridges—metaphorically and literally.
• Pitchfork took a look at a mysterious new video on Bon Iver’s website (Is it a promotion? Is it an attempt at an artsy-fartsy video?), and included a clip from Volcano Choir’s terrific show last month at Turner Hall.
• Urban Milwaukee posted updates on two storefront renovations: the 788 N. Jefferson St. building in East Town, and the new Crank Daddy’s on 2170 N. Prospect Ave.
• Lastly, don’t forget: Tomorrow is Record Store Day!
