The south side restaurant had a really, really bad month

The Journal Sentinel reported this weekend on the city’s worst violators of restaurant health codes in October, and at the top of the list is El Rey Market (916 S. Cesar Chavez Dr., 414-671-6150), which was guilty of 10 “critical” violations. (Meaning they were serious enough to increase the likelihood of food-related illness.) Inspectors found fruit flies in the juice area, a meat slicer that was also used to cut raw beef and chicken, and dirty dishes on the floor. El Rey also wasn’t date-marking its wares, so customers had no idea how old their food was. The store says it has taken steps to correct the mistakes. About a quarter of the nearly 460 restaurants, bars, and other establishments inspected last month were cited at least once, the J-S reports.
