Local Newswire Field Report, Jaill, other good bands head up surprisingly solid 2013 WAMI nominees

CJ Foeckler Field Report

Oh, Wisconsin Area Music Industry (or WAMI, if you’re nasty): Has it already been a year since we took our annual potshots at your notoriously suspect and scattershot awards? Has it been that long since Bon Iver won a bunch of trophies, since Rabid Aardvarks were crowned Cover Band of the Year, and since The A.V. Club Milwaukee was stiffed in the prestigious Print/Electronic Media (Southeast) category? (We’re still keeping an eye on you, Shepherd Express.)

But all that’s in the past, because WAMI has announced its 2013 nominees, and you know what? They’re not bad. Sure, there are still plenty of oddball choices (2012 “Rising Star” winner Nora Collins is nominated for the 2013 “Rising Star” award; Group Of The Altos is apparently a “Big Band”), but there’s also plenty of good stuff (Field Report, Jaill, Trapper Schoepp And The Shades, Klassik). And hey, even though the BoDeans aren’t up for any awards, former BoDeans singer Sammy Llanas is. Now that’s the WAMI we know and love.

Below are a few categories of note. (Head to the WAMI website for a full list.) The awards show is scheduled for Sunday, April 14 at Turner Hall.
