Get the sled out

Three Milwaukee hills to hit before winter ends

No related

Believe it or not, but the sledding season will soon take a nosedive into the nearest budding tree. So, before the snow melts away, it’s time to grab a cheap piece of plastic and hit one of Milwaukee’s best hills. Here are three of Decider’s favorite sledding destinations when we don’t feel like acting our age.

Humboldt Park, 3000 S. Howell Avenue
For those who revel in a good, hearty polar wind rushing against their cheeks, Humboldt Park’s stretch of hills are a veritable late winter wonderland. The park boasts both mountainous, swiftly-dropping inclines and smaller, bunny-type hills. Be sure to scope out the sledder-created “moguls” dotting the hill. Perfect for tube cruising, these little bumps will turn a polite ride into a mini adventure. Humboldt is open until 8 p.m., perfect for over-grown kids who like their sledding activities to be free of actual children.

St. Mary’s Hill, 2323 N. Lake Drive
Flanked by a gigantic helicopter launch pad and fronted by the polar icecaps of frosty Lake Michigan, there’s nothing quite like shooting like a bullet towards Mother Nature’s watery embrace on St. Mary’s Hill. The top of the hill isn’t exactly roomy—there’s only a metal barricade and a couple feet of space between you and North Avenue—but the trip down is well worth the cramped launch and cramp-inducing trek back up the hill.

Whitnall Park, 5879 S. 92nd Street
Where else can you rent a 7-foot toboggan and fly down a slick track of ice? Whitnall Park has a stellar sledding hill, but the main attraction here is the toboggan slide. Each toboggan can fit two adults comfortably, and with the added weight comes added speed. There’s also lots of beauty, with the Boerner Botanical Gardens located nearby. Afterward, head to the Whitnall Park clubhouse for hot chocolate.
