Just Announced Ghostface Killah, Minus The Bear, Zappa Plays Zappa, Hank III

Ghostface Killah

In their never-ending quest to take every single one of your hard-earned dollars, local music venues have put several noteworthy shows on the sale block this Friday and Saturday. Here are the most tempting choices:

Ghostface Killah, Nov. 2 at The Rave/Eagles Ballroom: On last year’s Ghostdini: The Wizard Of Poetry, the man who’s occasionally known as Pretty Toney let his loverman side shine for an entire album, proving that past come-ons like “Camay” and “Beauty Jackson” weren’t the only chinks in his tough-guy armor. (Tickets are $16.50 and $21.50 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.)

Minus The Bear, Dec. 17 at The Rave/Eagles Ballroom: Minus The Bear has devised a sound full of cryptic experimentalism and rich, complex melody over the course of a string of stunning releases. The quantum-level hooks and debauched subject matter of 2007’s Planet Of Ice resurface on the newly released Omni. (Tickets are $17.50 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.)

Zappa Plays Zappa, Dec. 10 at Turner Hall: Like Sean Lennon and Jakob Dylan, Dweezil Zappa is a talented musician perhaps more cursed than blessed by his more gifted father’s name. Unlike most rock-star kids, however, Dweezil seems to have accepted his role as his father’s son. Hence Zappa Plays Zappa, a tribute band Dweezil formed to bring his father’s rock-oriented material to a new generation. (Tickets are $35 and go on sale at noon Friday.)

Hank III And Assjack, Oct. 23 at The Rave/Eagles Ballroom: Hank Williams III plays a bizarro hybrid of country, metal, and rockabilly, which he refers to as “100 Percent Pure Hellbilly.” It’s a schizoid mix of his grandpa’s dusky honky-tonk and formulaic hardcore shout-outs about getting ripped up and fixin’ to wrassle—a pugnacious sound that got an extra dose of brutality on 2009’s Assjack, which finds Williams fronting the L.A. band of the same name. (Tickets are $19.50 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.)
