As kids, we ran after the ice cream truck with two quarters clutched in our grubby palms, chasing down an eerie, twinkling refrain of “The Farmer In The Dell” to get our mitts on a rocket pop. As adults, we’re treated to artisan foods and trendy nibbles via mobile food kitchens, and instead of listening for the Doppler-effected nursery music to know the goodies are near, we follow our favorite food vendors on Twitter.
The coasts have seen a proliferation of these street vendors, to the extent that things have gotten really ugly in New York, where old-school gyro and hot dog vendors aren’t exactly welcoming the fancypants foodie trucks with open arms. Here in Milwaukee, though, the competition is a little less fierce, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know how to do a food truck up right: Streetza Pizza, which offers locally sourced and often organic Milwaukee-centric pies like the Brew Crew Sausage Race slice and tweets frequently about its location and specials, has been named one of the top food trucks in America by men’s fashion magazine GQ. That’s not surprising, really—if any city is going to excel at a trend where the pizza finds the diner, it’s Milwaukee. What is surprising, though, is that LA Weekly picked up the story and referred to the “the nattily-dressed types lining up to order slices of sausage-and-cheese pizza” in Milwaukee.
Aw, shucks. A Los Angeles blog is talking about our sharp-dressed here in ol’ Milwaukee? Most of the time, folks on the coasts assume we’re all wearing cheeseheads and overalls. It’s about time an L.A. publication bothered to come here and have a look at our fashionable residents. Thank you, thank you LA Weekly for noticing us, at long last. We appreciate that you took the time to make mention of our style and combat stereotypes in an article about food trucks. You didn’t have to do it, but you did.
