Grammy-nominated Justin Vernon thinks the Grammys are “ridiculous,” of course
If there’s one thing a non-Grammy-nominated band or artist can do to set themselves apart from bands or artists that do get nominated for Grammys, it’s by poking fun at the Grammys, of course. That’s just what Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon did in a previously unpublished excerpt from a June interview with The New York Times. Unfortunately for Vernon, he’s now been nominated for four awards—Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best New Artist, and Best Alternative Music Album—making his months-old statements a wee bit awkward:
“I don’t think the Bon Iver record is the kind of record that would get nominated for a Grammy—I would get up there and be like, ‘This is for my parents, because they supported me,’ because I know they would think it would be stupid of me not to go up there. But I kinda felt like going up there and being like: ‘Everyone should go home, this is ridiculous. You should not be doing this. We should not be gathering in a big room and look at each other and pretending this is important.’ That’s what I would say.”
Ridiculous though the Grammys may or may not be (they’re ridiculous), Vernon can rest well knowing that thanks to the Milwaukee and Madison A.V. Clubs, Rosie O’Donnell bought his newest album, and thinks that it’s “good music for making dinner.” You’re welcome. [via Pitchfork]
