I Turned Into A Misfit: 5 temporary band members from Misfits' post-Danzig era

They weren't knocked off, they just walked off

Jerry Only, as in "the only original member still left in Misfits."

Since reforming Misfits in 1996 without vocalist and chief songwriter Glenn Danzig, sole remaining original member Jerry Only and a revolving door of musicians have toured the world, much to the chagrin of punk purists who feel Danzig was the heart and soul of the band. But plenty of fans still flock to Misfits’ dark, melodic, and diabolically catchy brand of spooky punk rock, and buy up armfuls of merchandise featuring the trademark The Crimson Ghost-inspired skull logo. For those that care, however, it can be hard to keep track of who exactly has been in this band over the years. In advance of Friday’s Misfits show at Modjeska Theatre, The A.V. Club takes a look at some of Misfits more curious post-Danzig era band members.

1. Michale Graves
Debuting on Misfits’ 1997 comeback album American Psycho and also singing on the follow-up, Famous Monsters, Graves wasn't a fan before joining up. (He quickly acquainted himself after learning the band was looking for a vocalist.) Graves essentially was Mötley Crüe for the punk set—the only blond in a band of brunettes. Since abruptly quitting the band onstage in 2000 along with drummer Dr. Chud, Graves has mounted a solo career and spoken out in support of the Conservative Punk website.

2. Dez Cadena
Most commonly known as “The Guy Who Sang In Black Flag Before Henry Rollins,” Cadena joined Misfits in the early aughts. Before that Dez bounced from weird group to weirder group, including a stint in Duff McKagan's backing band for the misbegotten, never-released 1999 solo record Beautiful Disease and a Blue Öyster Cult cover band named Chop with former Minutemen bassist Mike Watt and filmmaker David Markey.

3. Marky Ramone
After a long career with punk icons Ramones, Marky Ramone played drums on the all-covers Misfits album Project 1950 and the single “The Day The Earth Caught Fire.” After leaving the group in 2005, Marky was soon spotted recording with Only and fill-in guitarist Cadena in Osaka Popstar, an anime-themed pop-punk band helmed by Ramones Raw director John Cafiero.

4. Ken Schalk
As drummer for Brooklyn's best (and only) hardcore-metal-jazz-hip-hop group Candiria, Ken Schalk wove complex drum patterns around just-as-insanely intricate guitar, bass, and vocal parts. Maybe he was looking for a break (or an easy paycheck) from Candiria's grueling songs in late 2000, but Misfits' simple 1-2-3-4 drum parts are quite a far cry from Shalk's previous group.

5. Jerry Only
Misfits’ only remaining original member is perhaps the oddest guy ever to be in the band. His receding hairline that he still keeps in the Devilock ’do, his overly defined physique, and his desire to keep the band going no matter who's in the band all reek of desperately holding onto a legacy that should have been laid to rest with the initial demise of Misfits.
