Milwaukee’s reputation as the “city of festivals” may be cliché, but it’s certainly well-earned: Pick any weekend during the blessedly toasty summer months and you’re sure to find a block party, an outdoor concert series, or, you know, Summerfest. But for those who prefer their festival entertainment to be a bit under the radar—and stocked with more bands and less inebriated picnic-table-dancing—there are shindigs like this weekend’s Lookout Weekend fest, which features nearly two dozen bands “from the Midwest and beyond” setting up shop in Milwaukee April 5-7. There aren’t any huge national or local names on Lookout’s sprawling schedule, and that’s exactly the point.
Organized by tireless local booking outfit Hey Tonight Productions, Lookout Weekend is a three-day celebration of all things psych, all things garage, and all things underground. Bands like Minneapolis’ Frozen Teens and Columbus’ Nervosas will join Milwaukee groups like The Delphines and Head On Electric for five shows spread across four Riverwest venues: Quarters, Linneman’s, Jackpot Gallery, and the relatively new Cocoon Room. 2013 marks the fest’s second year in existence, and even includes a few far-flung bands like Acid Baby Jesus (from Athens, Greece) and Warm Soda (ex-Bare Wires members from Oakland, California).
For a full run-down of the festival’s schedule (which includes both all-ages and 21+ shows) check out the official Lookout Weekend site. And if you’re looking for a sonic primer before the festivities begin, Hey Tonight has assembled a 21-song playlist of most of the bands scheduled to perform.
