Spring took its damn time to get here, but now that it has, Milwaukee is lulling itself into the false hope that it won’t leave again. In addition to all the ball games, music festivals, and general enjoyment, there are a few events to encourage those who might normally be burned by the sun to spend five whole minutes outside before returning to Skyrim. This upcoming weekend sees the convergence of two big, nerdy holidays: Free Comic Book Day (May 4) encourages local comic book stores to open their doors to those who think polybagging is something they read about in a Dan Savage column; May The 4th is also a pun-based holiday (“May the 4th be with you”) to raise awareness about an old movie called Star Wars, and an excuse to dust off those VHS or LaserDisc copies of the Original Trilogy.
The Wisconsin garrison of the 501st Legion will be out in force (heh) on May 4. The Legion has events going on in Racine, Oshkosh, Manitowoc, Waukesha, Madison, and Twin Lakes. The usual Stormtroopers are expected, but many members have branched out into other costumes both from the movies and the Expanded Universe that Disney will likely soon demolish. For those who enjoy their cosplay with a bit more unlicensed nuclear acceleration, members of the Wisconsin Ghostbusters will be joining the 501st in Madison.
Free Comic Book Day, meanwhile, offers a chance for comic book fans to pick up some tie-in comics for this year’s upcoming superhero blockbusters, with comic book stores offering various sales and promos to get people in the door. For those comic fans who insist on calling comic books graphic novels, an art show on Free Comic Book Day will blend the pop art of comics with the high-class feel of a gallery show. SPOILERS, at Bay View’s Z Chiropractic, features work from local comic artists as well as pieces from private comic collections. There is a pair of dramatic readings of comics at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., and should the muse strike and the wallet itch, a comic book store is located directly across the street from the venue.
Finally, this weekend marks the grand opening of 42 Lounge, a bar that offers craft beer, mixed drinks, and gaming stations for Halo tournaments right out of dorm-dwelling history. The grand opening festivities stretch on through the weekend, but the bar is cooking up quite the Star Wars holiday special: the “Qui-Gon Gin And Tonic” and the “Darth Maultini.” The bar will be serving light-side and dark-side shots all day; whichever side drinks more shots, their corresponding drink will be cheaper. Turn pre-gaming for Cinco De Mayo into a struggle of good versus evil!
