When future historians look back on the great mustache renaissance of the early 21st century, they’ll no doubt discuss the finer points of irony and class, and probably make a crack or two about Hall And Oates. They’ll also mention Milwaukee’s important role in the ’stache resurgence, and, if a new study is to be believed, the city’s open-arms policy for those brave warriors who choose to rock a dirt lip. Yes, according to a recent report (link opens a PDF) by the—wait for it—American Mustache Institute, Milwaukee ranks No. 6 among the country’s most “mustache-friendly cities.” And who says we have an image problem?
In case you’re unfamiliar with the ever-so-tongue-in-cheek AMI, it states its mission as “protecting the rights of, and fighting discrimination against, mustached Americans.” (Fight the good fight!) As for Milwaukee’s spot on the list—higher than Cleveland’s, but lower than Detroit’s—it has to do with two key things: beer and the 1982 Brewers. Of the ’82 Crew, the report has this to say:
“We were surprised when multiple former Brewers relief pitchers showed up in focus groups,” said AMI economic geographer Dr. Bruce Nagel. “I mean, Moose Haas? Who knew?”
The report also notes the high number of Applebee’s restaurants in the area, an indicator of mustache-friendliness we weren’t previously aware of, but that we think is pretty funny. Also factoring into the relatively high ranking are our “high quality boating and fishing sports,” Harley-Davidson, and a “penchant for copious beer consumption at most meals, polka events, baseball games, and during Lutheran services.”
