New winter farmers market starts Saturday at State Fair Park

Fresh, local foods will be easier to find in Milwaukee this year

It’s an unpleasant fact for those of us who live in cold, dark, blustery Wisconsin: We still have to eat in winter. How did our lunatic ancestors—who settled here long before there were fast food restaurants and Rice-A-Roni—do it? There’s snow all over the ground and nothing grows again for six months, right? Fortunately, the Milwaukee County Winter Farmers Market has popped up this year to keep our bellies full of delicious, local foods straight through until the outdoor markets open up again in spring. It's held at the Tommy Thompson Youth Center at State Fair Park and will be open nearly every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon until April 24.

What will you find at this indoor farmers market? Lots of stuff, like Wisconsin-raised, grass-fed beef, organic mushrooms, handmade pies, artisan cheeses, pastured chickens, apple cider, and Wisconsin-milled oats. All the vendors (there are 18 at this point) are local and most feature organic products. Yum!
