NLTV: The New Loud's top 3 music videos

The Milwaukee band looks for visual stimulation before next week's video shoot for "Don't Dance"

Milwaukee band The New Loud is shooting a music video for its new single “Don’t Dance” next week, and the new-wave dance-punk trio wants your help. On Monday, The New Loud needs extras to show up at the Cactus Club at 8 p.m. to create “a live club-like atmosphere” for the shoot. Then on Tuesday, the band is calling on professional dancers to swing by at 10 a.m. at the Humphrey Scottish Rite Masonic Center (790 N. Van Buren St., 414-276-4744). Aside from featuring a lot of amateur and paid booty-shakers, we don’t know what the “Don’t Dance” clip is going to look like. Looking for clues, The A.V. Club asked singer-guitarist Shane Olivo about his favorite music videos.

New Order, “True Faith”

Shane Olivo: This video is really cool. It has this surreal imagery of various characters dressed up in colorful uniforms, doing all this reverse image stuff. At one point in the video there’s a woman who’s painted green in an upside-down boxing speed bag uniform. And she’s actually signing the lyrics of the songs, which is kind of a hilarious concept.

The A.V. Club: There's a lot of weird stuff happening in the “True Faith” clip. Is any of this going to influence the “Don’t Dance” video?

SO: Probably not. This is pretty surreal and out there. But it does make an impression. It’s something you can’t get out of your head.

Our Brother The Native, “Younger”

SO: This is kind of a found-footage video. It makes use of this 1960s bicycle-safety-awareness video. There’s actually a few videos that use this exact same footage—some band called Goddamn Electric Bill used it, and Boards Of Canada also used it. The way Our Brother The Native uses it, it adds another level to both the song and the actual video footage. It brings out the creepiness of the video.

Jose Gonzalez, “Heartbeats”

SO: It takes place in San Francisco, and they shot 250,000 super balls down a hill. It’s amazing. It’s more or less an advertisement, but it’s also a video. The only way to make something like this if you’re not signed to a major label is getting involved with corporate sponsorship.

AVC: So The New Loud would do a commercial if somebody asked you to?

SO: Yeah. Just recently we had one of our songs “Secrets” in a show called Cougar Town. The show is bad, but that’s one of the main revenue streams for bands trying to make this a serious living.

AVC: And that song was about cougars anyway, right?

SO: [Laughs.] Exactly!
