Now Streaming Northless, Leaving The Wolves

One of our favorite Milwaukee bands lately is the sludge-metal outfit Northless, which plays what surely will rank among the loudest local shows of the year Friday at Club Garibaldi with Call Me Lightning, Protestant, and Enabler. To get psyched for the show—and the band’s forthcoming double-album Clandestine Abuse—we’ve been blasting Northless’ Leaving The Wolves EP, which was released on cassette by local label Halo Of Flies back in May. Only 100 copies of Wolves were pressed, so it has long since sold out in its original format, but Northless posted the album as a free download over the weekend.

It’s only up for two weeks, so you’ll want to act fast. The six songs on Wolves spotlight the howling vocals and belching riffage of singer-guitarist Erik Stenglein and the sledgehammer-to-the-chest drumming of Dan Opgenorth, who combine to create overwhelming sonic doom on self-explanatory tracks like “Cadaver Junkie” and “Holocaust Of Self.” (Wolves was recorded in 2008; Opgenorth has since been replaced by drummer John Gleisner and guitarist Nick Elert.) We highly recommend burning the MP3s on a CD, and then dubbing that CD on a blank cassette tape. Once that’s done, the sacrificing of virgins can begin.

If you love the songs and happen to play bass, you could even end up joining the band—Northless is holding tryouts for a new bassist starting next month. Head here for more information.
