How awesome was the Green Bay Packers’ win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV? If Facebook is to be believed (and who wouldn’t believe Facebook?), nearly as awesome as the death of Osama Bin Laden. Yes, according to an official Facebook post entitled “Like My Status: Memology 2011,” the Pack’s February Super Bowl victory was the second-most discussed topic on the ubiquitous social media website, losing only to Bin Laden’s death in May. Can we get a “Fuck yeah!” America?
From the Facebook post:
Memology takes the pulse of this global community by comparing this year’s status updates to last year’s, unearthing the most popular topics and cultural trends—or memes—emerging on Facebook. Whether it’s hmu, lms or tbh, each year brings a new set of three letter acronyms that go viral. [...]
The year’s biggest sports event came in February, when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers to win Super Bowl XLV. Not surprisingly, Packers fans were particularly active around each post-season match (represented by the spikes on the chart), culminating in their victory on February 6.
So what hot-button topics did the Pack leave in the status-update dust? Oh, just stuff like the Casey Anthony trial (wow), Charlie Sheen (ugh), the death of Steve Jobs (wow), and the Royal Wedding (thank God). Not included in Facebook’s findings were the number of people who spent 2011 bitching about Facebook, threatening to defect to Google+, and quietly saying “hello” again after realizing Google+ kind of blows.
