Today is the kickoff for the MARNkino Kabaret 48-hour short film challenge. Interested filmmakers can sign up at the Milwaukee Artists’ Resource Network office (5407 W. Vliet St., just a few blocks east of the Times Cinema). The short films need to be finished by Sunday night, and they’ll be screened at the Times Thursday, Nov. 17. Since all teams have to incorporate a surprise theme revealed by MARN today at 5:30 p.m., a $3 admission will allow you to see movies that, as of this writing, haven’t even been thought of yet. It’s ironic that in the age of instant information, you can stream any old movie on the Internet, but you’ll have to go to a 70-year-old movie house to see the most recent films.

Registration is free, and the only restrictions are that the films be no longer than seven minutes and contain no images, sounds, or locations the filmmakers don’t have permission to use. (Oh, and no X-rated material.) So the creative possibilities are nearly endless—you can even film sex at Klinger’s East as long as you don’t show penetration and you ask the bartender first.
