Newswire Smashing Pumpkins announce 12-city “warm-up” tour

If you’re a bit baffled by the current iteration of alt legends Smashing Pumpkins, you’re probably not alone. After a string of stone-cold classic ’90s albums—Gish, Siamese Dream, most of Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness—frontman Billy Corgan killed the group in 2000. Since then, he’s both thrilled and confused (mostly confused) fans with lineup changes, supergroups (Zwan), and in-name-only Pumpkins albums (2007’s Zeitgeist). These days, the group is comprised of Corgan, guitarist Jeff Schroeder, drummer Mike Byrne, and D’arcy surrogate Nicole Fiorentino. Yup, the group still has a lady bass player, and one who may or may not have appeared on the cover of Siamese Dream!

But never mind that now. Corgan and company have just announced a 12-city tour that will serve as a “warm-up” to a more ambitious tour in 2012. Classics, deep-cuts, and new songs are promised. A new album, Oceania, is scheduled for 2012, and will be part of the Corgan’s ongoing 44-song Teargarden By Kaleidyscope project. The tour will also coincide with reissues of the band’s 1991-2000 albums, and a “best-of” album in 2013.
