The members of Sonic Youth will forever be seen as underground-rock gods, which is kind of incredible considering the fact that they’ve spent roughly 19 of 28 years together on a major label. But Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon & Co. have always played by their own rules, which translates into a quarter-century of creative lows and highs. Early word on the band’s forthcoming record The Eternal (due June 9 on Matador Records) is that it will continue the straight forward guitar pop direction taken on 2006’s Rather Ripped, which is probably good news for most fans. (You can download the propulsive Kim Gordon-sung rocker “Sacred Trickster” from Matador’s website.)
Even if the new album sucks, you can still count on a few chestnuts from Daydream Nation when the band performs July 20 at Turner Hall. Tickets go on sale at noon Saturday for $24.50 at the Pabst and Riverside box offices. In the meantime, here’s the band performing one of its greatest songs, “Teen Age Riot.”
