One problematic thread running through Steve Martin’s decades-long career is that he’s always hard to pin down, but almost always expected to be funny—even when he’s detoured into serious acting roles and writing plays. When Martin decided recently to make a serious go out of banjo-playing, it really shouldn’t have shocked anyone: He used to either drag it out during his act or have it strapped on throughout, even when he wasn’t singing. According to Martin’s onstage shtick, he met his Grammy award-winning backing band The Steep Canyon Rangers at a party, and their lively performances together since 2009 certainly carry on in that spirit. Martin and the group released Rare Bird Alert in 2011, featuring guest spots from Paul McCartney and The Dixie Chicks, but Martin is always best experienced live—regardless of whether he’s cracking jokes.
Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers are set to return to Milwaukee Wednesday, July 24 at The Riverside Theater. Edie Brickell of New Bohemians fame will also join Martin in performing songs from their upcoming album, Love Has Come For You. Reserved seating tickets are $39.50, $55, and $75, and go on sale Friday, February 22 at noon. (Read our review of Martin’s excellent 2010 Milwaukee show here.)
