Stream Maritime’s new album, Human Hearts
The A.V. Club is proud to offer exclusive streaming audio of the latest album from indie-rock mainstay Maritime, Human Hearts, which is due out on Dangerbird Records April 5. Maritime has long been close to our hearts; we invited the Milwaukee band to cover Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy The Silence” for Undercover last year, and you can hear Human Hearts’ fantastic lead-off track “It’s Casual” over the opening credits of this season of Undercover. We’ve been fans of Maritime’s Davey von Bohlen and Dan Didier ever since their days in seminal emo-pop band The Promise Ring, but Human Hearts might be the best album they’ve yet made in their current group.
When The A.V. Club talked to Didier about the record last week, he told us that Maritime felt free to take its time on Human Hearts after it severed ties with former label Flameshovel. While 2007’s Heresy And The Hotel Choir was recorded relatively quickly over the course of a few weeks, Maritime spent months honing Human Hearts, free from the pressures of external expectations. “No one is telling us that we’re the next big thing,” Didier says. “That was a constant joke among members of The Promise Ring. We heard it for so long that it just became a joke.”
“Next big thing” talk aside, we think Human Hearts sounds pretty great. Check it out.
