In case you missed the part where the entire state of Wisconsin exploded in a blaze of green, gold, and “You have GOT to be shitting me!” the Green Bay Packers defeated lost to the Seattle Seahawks in a Monday night game that gave new meaning to the terms “fiasco” and “GAHHHHHH!” After a entire evening of dubious/missed/B.S. calls from the NFL “replacement refs”—a.k.a. down-on-their-luck high school parking lot attendants—the game was essentially gifted to Seattle on the last play when M.D. Jennings intercepted the ball in the endzone Golden Tate scored a touchdown. (Sports Illustrated’s Peter King called it “One of the great disgraces in NFL history.”)
Of course, the Internet also exploded—in a flurry of tirades against the so-called “scab refs.” So if you’re among the many, many Wisconsinites who need to come to terms with last night’s debacle, The A.V. Club presents the Five Stages Of Packers-“Scab-Refs” Grief, brought to you by the ever-popular Kübler-Ross model. And Twitter.
1. Denial
“That’s not a TD.”
2. Anger
“if i was the green bay i beat the fuck out of the jabroni refs and make them eat dog shit. the seattle get lucky bubba” (The Iron Sheik)
“Got fucked by the refs.. Embarrassing. Thanks nfl” (T.J. Lang)
“Fuck it NFL.. Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs.” (Also T.J. Lang)
“Hey Seahawks, you didn’t build that.”
“Okay, TOTALLY TIME for the Cheap Assed Owners to PONY UP!! These refs are in Over their heads!!! OBVIOUSLY!!!” (Samuel L. Jackson)
“Anyone doing anything fun Sunday? I’m open to new hobbies.”
“Any player/coach in Seattle that really thinks they won that game has zero integrity as a man and should be embarrassed.” (T.J. Lang again)
5. Acceptance
“SERIOUS QUESTION: Do we get the day off of work tomorrow? #NFL #MNF #Packers”
