Tucked Away The National

Find organic sandwiches and tasty treats in Walker's Point

Off the beaten path, down that flight of stairs, or tucked behind some crappy façade in a strip mall, some restaurants are overlooked because of their weird locations. It’s almost like there’s a parallel universe of Milwaukee dining lurking just beyond the curtain of the conventional. Just because a restaurant isn’t on the East Side, though, doesn’t mean the food’s not worth tracking down. Case in point: The National (839 W. National Ave., 414-431-6551) in Walker’s Point.

When diners head to National Avenue, it’s usually in search of margaritas and spicy enchiladas or noodle bowls—not organic sandwiches and lattés. But that’s just what The National, a bright little coffee shop with a focus on eco-friendly dining, does. Colorful and warm, the interior mixes existing architecture, like exposed brick, with retro patterns and contemporary tables and accents, plus local art. While not completely cozy, The National has a relaxing neighborhood vibe.

Breakfast is modestly priced and features perennial morning meal favorites like omelets, tofu scramble, and French toast. But sandwiches and wraps form the bulk of the menu. Using fresh, organic ingredients, The National’s offerings are familiar but not boring. Try a Door County cherry chicken salad wrap complete with lemon, nuts, and greens, or one of the vegetarian and vegan options, like the black bean sandwich and a build-your-own grilled cheese. All sandwiches and wraps come with a generous side of huge, homemade tortilla chips.

For its caffeine drinks, The National serves local roaster Anodyne’s brews, as well as selection from a Chicago bean-pusher called Metropolis Coffee Company, which means you’re all but guaranteed a great cup of joe here. But don’t just come to fuel up or nibble a sandwich; there are surprises all over the menu, like the mango, jicama, and chicken salad, fresh soups, and treats from City Market and Amaranth Bakery will keep your sweet tooth happy.
