The new video for Bon Iver’s “Holocene”: In Iceland, off your feet
When we last left the surreal video world of Bon Iver, up was down, black was white, and a stuffed bear emerged from an upside-down platform. And if the video for “Calgary” didn’t make a whole lot of sense, at least it was nice to look at. Now, Justin Vernon and company have taken to the gorgeous, alien climes of Iceland for a new video for “Holocene.” Once again, it’s a plotless and enigmatic affair, but an absolute feast for the eyes. Sadly, a cameo from a certain Icelandic pixie is nowhere to be found.
So what does the video feature? Oh, the usual: stunning vistas, endless volcanic landscapes, and a young boy doing all the improbably symbolic stuff kids do in those old David Gordon Green movies. It’s undeniably gorgeous, and a far cry from the dark, beer-drunk images conjured up in the lyrics. Yes, the “You’re in Milwaukee, you’re off your feet” controversy is far from over, Bon Iver. Don’t think your very own holiday gets you off the hook. [National Geographic]
