The overexposure of Milverine continues unabated

Back in October 2010, we ran a piece on the mysterious “Milverine,” Milwaukee’s favorite power walker who kind of looks like an X-Men-era Hugh Jackman. Since then, spotting and reporting on the oft-shirtless enigma has become something of a cottage industry in town, as evidenced by an insanely entertaining Facebook page, and any number of likeminded websites. But is it just us, or is the whole Milverine thing getting a little out of hand? Might the bronzed, purposefully striding icon be ... played out?

It certainly seems that way. Today, a small piece on Milverine can be found on the site of Milwaukee’s ultimate arbiters of cool, WKLH’s Dave and Carole. Then there’s A Brief History Of The Milverine, a blog more notable for its lack of Milverine pictures than for any actual shots. Shit, the dude even has his own Yelp thread. What’s next, a stilted John McGivern monologue on the mysterious beast? Might the once-confounding creature end up as nothing more than one of “Perry’s People”?

But hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little press. The man is an institution, and deserves all of the snickering attention he can get. Still, we’d like to take this opportunity to make a small request to our colleagues in the local media: Do not attempt to “expose” the Milverine. We know it’s tempting—just think of all the hits a one-on-one interview would drum up!—but that would seriously ruin an already precarious situation. Milverine is a phenomenon by the people and for the people. Let’s try to keep it that way, bubs.
