The Journal Sentinel has a heartbreaking/maddening story today about former Lambeau Field maintenance worker Mike Wood, who was fired Nov. 1 for making a comment to Packers coach Mike McCarthy prior to the 38-26 hometown beatdown at the hands of the Vikings. According to Wood, he told McCarthy to “get the boys ready to kick some butt this weekend” on the Thursday prior to the game. That Sunday, Wood was approached by his bosses about the comment, which McCarthy apparently misheard as “a comment along the lines of ‘don’t lay an egg’ in the game,” the JS reports. After the Packers fired Wood—who worked for the team for 22 years—he broke down and wandered over to the nearby Stadium View Bar to watch the game.
“I am not in charge of the maintenance department, I can tell you that,” McCarthy sniffed when asked about the incident this morning on WTMJ-AM. “I did not fire anybody in the maintenance department.” Sounds like a classic non-denial denial to us. Gee, you wonder if Favre was inside McCarthy's head that week?
