?uestlove isn’t pleased with Justin Vernon’s “half baked” list of favorite hip-hop lyrics
It’s a cold, hard, scientific fact that everyone loves a list, especially if that list includes something like, oh, say, favorite hip-hop lyrics. But don’t tell that to Roots drummer ?uestlove, who wasn’t pleased when he discovered the new issue of Rolling Stone included Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon’s list of favorite hip-hop lyrics, but not his own list of “Songs That Shaped Me.” As is the custom of the day, ?uestlove took to Twitter to voice his displeasure, noting that he had “SLAVED for hrs givin a damn near college level list only to read new issue to see they dropped it,” and calling Vernon’s list “half baked.”
Fully baked or not, Vernon’s list is solid, and includes nods to Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, and Lauryn Hill. It’s also a bit unsurprising, especially the inclusion of Nicki Minaj’s verse in Kayne West’s “Monster”—a song that also features Vernon. ?uestlove’s list, meanwhile, is indeed damn near college level, and includes short, in-depth entries on everyone from Dolly Parton to Public Enemy. It’s also more than twice the length of Vernon’s list, so we’re going to assume Rolling Stone ran into some space issues and call this feud a slow-news-day draw. [via Pitchfork]
