We heart Rick Springfield
Decider gives a nod to the '80s rocker in advance of his weekend stand at Potawatomi Casino
Most people remember Rick Springfield, if they remember him at all, for his stint on General Hospital, which means his music is often treated as a silly afterthought. But he made some quality new wave-inspired pop-rock records in the early ’80s, garnering the mass acclaim that eluded thornier singer-songwriters like Elvis Costello and Graham Parker. Yes, it helped that Springfield was a total pretty boy, but he also could bring the goods on hooky songs like “Don’t Talk To Strangers” and the immortal “Jessie’s Girl,” the centerpiece track of Springfield’s best album, 1981’s Working Class Dog.
Not only is "Jessie's Girl" one of the great power-pop songs of its era, it's also the soundtrack for the "drug deal gone massively wrong" scene from Boogie Nights, one of the most memorable in modern cinema. People started doing a lot more blow to Springfield records after that.
Springfield comes to town tonight for the first of three shows at Potwatomi Casino. While he's currently touring behind the extremely un-rockingly titled My Little Precious One: Lullabies For A New Generation, he's likely to whip himself into a sweaty mess while jamming on his early '80s material. In honor of the man also known as Dr. Noah Drake, here’s the music video for “Jessie’s Girl.” We dare you not to feel dirty when he starts talking cute.
