Weekend (Summerfest) Agenda: June 27-28
Must-see shows at The Big Gig and elsewhere in Milwaukee
During an on-air interview Thursday on WMSE, pop culture writer and Kiss fanatic Chuck Klosterman admitted that he’s curious about the band’s current tour because he’s never seen guitarist (and Ace Frehley replacement) Tommy Thayer perform in makeup. Such is the devotion of the Kiss Army, which likely will show up in big numbers tonight at Summerfest despite the absence of founding members Frehley and Peter Criss. Another big draw tonight is sure to be BoDeans—outside of Wisconsin the group might still be remembered as “that Party Of Five band,” but here in Wisconsin summers aren’t complete without at least a half-dozen BoDeans shows at local festivals.
On Sunday Stevie Wonder and John Legend ought to class up and rock out the Summerfest proceedings, which should definitely be more danceable than most days thanks to Milwaukee’s De La Buena. Also be sure to look out for dueling guitarists Rodrigo Y Gabriela, emo buzz band The Airborne Toxic Event, and local indie rockers Elusive Parallelograms.
Outside of Summerfest, the Downer Avenue Pro Criterium takes place Saturday on the East side, which includes a big bike race and a block party in front of Café Hollander. Down in Bay View, The Championship will celebrate the release of its new EP Moving At The Speed Of Darkness Saturday with a show at The Cactus Club. For an early listen, check out the stream here.
