Welcome to the week: July 15-21
Only total creeps who forget how miserable Wisconsin can be in the winter would complain about the “dog days of summer,” but let’s face it: these are the dog days of summer. It’s muggy as all get out, there’s nowhere in the city to swim, and the Brewers are currently a professional baseball team in name only. Happily, there’s a metric ton of top-flight shows this week and coming weekend that should keep you occupied in these trying, humid times. Just remember to wear a sensible pair of jorts and stay hydrated.
Looking for local album-release parties? We’ve got ’em. Milwaukee rockers Misery Signals celebrate the impending release of its new record, Absent Light, at the Miramar July 18. Experimental Madison group Pushmi-Pullyu unveils its new Never Love A Stranger at the Riverwest Public House July 18. Not to be outdone, another Madison outfit, All Tiny Creatures, will release its new album, Dark Clock, at Stonefly on July 19.
Let’s say you’re interested in big-name acts that may or may not feature former members of Metallica. There’s Megadeth at The Rave July 19; Melissa Etheridge at the Riverside July 20; and the Melvins and Mudhoney at Turner Hall July 21. (Hint: Melissa Etheridge was not in Metallica.)
For the indoor kids, Chuck Klosterman will be stopping by Boswell Book Company July 18 to promote his latest book, I Wear The Black Hat: Grappling With Villains (Real And Imagined). For the outdoor kids, Festa Italiana kicks off July 19, while the Milwaukee Firkin Craft Beer Festival takes over Cathedral Square July 20.
Oh, and then there’s Paul McCartney at Miller Park July 16. Perhaps you’ve heard of him? He was in The Beatles. And then Wings. And then, um, Give My Regards To Broad Street. Non-nosebleed tickets are a little on the high side (don’t even ask about parking), and we wouldn’t be surprised if people were paying up to, oh, let’s say, $3,000 to hear Sir Paul play three Beatles tunes. (“‘She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah,’ that’s $1,000 right there.”) See you in the Uecker seats!
