After only a year at their Walker’s Point location, The White Whale Collective announced this week that they have decided not to renew their lease and will close their doors for good when their current show, Strings, Mounds, Lines & Sounds ends Feb. 28.
“We are very grateful for everyone's support and for that little building that housed a lot of art in one year,” collective member Emily Belknap said in a statement sent to White Whale’s email list. “We started the White Whale Artist Collective so that we would be encouraged to be active artists immediately after finishing school. This has been a great stepping stone and learning experience for all of us.”
White Whale was one of three artist collectives to open in less than 10 months in 2008 with hopes of bringing accessible, affordable bodies of artwork to the masses. Once White Whale closes, only the Borg Ward Collective will remain. Strings, Mounds, Lines & Sounds features works by founding members, including Belknap and Julia Schilling.
