It’s that time of year again—a time when every website, blog, and Facebook user known to man compiles their dubious “best of” lists. (We’ll have our own dubious lists in the upcoming weeks.) But who would have guessed that local news outlet WISN was also a player in the Top 10 racket? Yes, the station that has never met a “satanic” werewolf-enthusiast it didn’t like is currently holding a “Best Local Bands” contest. And, as you might expect, the nominees redefine the words “best,” “local,” and “completely random.”
Head on over to the contest page and you’ll find plenty of great bands worthy of your vote: The Scarring Party, Maritime, Decibully (R.I.P.), and the .357 String Band (also R.I.P.). You’ll also find a veritable ton of cover bands (The Love Monkeys!), tribute bands (U2Zoo!), and, um, cover-tribute bands (Cherry Pie!). The Top 5 alone is like a wet dream at Rooters: The Screamin’ Cucumbers, Chasin Mason, The Toys, Element 13, and, yes, The Love Monkeys.
A glance at past winners from 2007-2010 (Element 13, The Screamin’ Cucumbers, etc.) should give you a pretty good idea of the types of bands that typically walk away with top honors, though that shouldn’t stop you from casting a vote for, say, a group that performs its own material. Voting ends Sunday, Dec. 18., so get busy clicking—and don’t forget to clear your browser cookies when you vote for Oil Can Harry 6,000 times.
