10 Years, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and The Last Place You Look at The Rave/Eagles Ballroom

The members of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus boast that their music contains “no hidden meaning”—thankfully, since it’d suck to have to dig any deeper to unearth the utter vapidity behind its generic emo-pop, which attempts to tackle serious subjects via shallow platitudes. Still, the group seems to buy its own image, and rock radio even made its 2007 single “Face Down” (from its debut, Don’t You Fake It) a crossover hit thanks to one of the hookiest choruses about domestic abuse since The Crystals’ “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss).” The 2009 album Lonely Road fares worse, mistaking pomp (Gospel choirs! Drill sergeant samples!) for circumstance on songs about believing in yourself and how war is totally lame. The band’s 2011 release, Am I The Enemy, maintains a fairly preachy vibe while returning to the standard screamo template.
